I have always had a passion for all animals. I discovered my love for guinea pigs when I was seven years old. My friend back then, had two piggies living in a run in her garden. In those days, I lived in the UK and guinea pigs and bunnies were kept in hutches and runs outside. How things have changed over the years. Anyway, I fell in love with those two pigs. I would make any excuse to be able to go visit my friend, just so I could play with her piggies.
I of course asked my family if I could have a guinea pig, and the answer I got was, when you are sixteen. Woah! That was nine years away. Well, my family did wait until my sixteenth birthday, and on that day I was taken to a pet store and was able to choose my first Guinea Pig. I loved that pig so much. I took him everywhere. My dad built me a run for him to eat the grass. I would sit and watch him for hours. His name was Bindooli. My very own Guinea Pig!
Well that was 37 years ago, and much has changed over that time. I got so much wrong for Bindooli. I did not have the education back then, but he had love and lots of it. A lot of piggies now live inside, at least here in the US. Too hot in Summer and too cold in Winter. When I first came here I was horrified that people kept their piggies and bunnies in their houses. Now it is normal to me and I could not imagine going back to a child, where they live outside.
There has been very few times in my life, when Guinea Pigs were not with me. They are my passion, they are my happy place. They can make the most stressful days feel better. Go into their room and see all those little piggy faces wheeking at you. All wanting a veggie treat, all pleased to see you.
Today we try and help as many pigs in need as we can. We either foster them in, or we use our social media to find them pet safe homes. We also breed some of our own to help us, help other pigs. When we breed our own, we take every precaution we can to keep mom and babies happy and healthy. We do not over breed, we do not back breed. Our girls are only bred twice with a recovery time in between. If they are not in perfect health, they are never bred. My heart is Rescue and foster, and one day I hope to be fully doing that.
All my piggies are family. Any fosters or rescues that come through Cherished Cavies, are welcomed back if we have the space. Life changes for humans sometimes, and I want to make sure our piggy friends are kept safe. If I don’t have the room at the time of need, I will help by using my social media pages.
I have learned never to judge anyone. Judging does not help piggies find safe homes. I am always grateful people reach out for help no matter the situation. Life throws curve balls sometimes, and it can happen to anyone of us at anytime. Of course, I have internal issues with cruelty and neglect, but getting angry does not help the piggies. Being kind, getting the piggies safe, educating people if they need it, that is what I want to achieve.
So, basically my piggy friends are my life. They are my happy place in life. When you get to know them, you soon realize how like us they really are. They are all so unique, each having their very own personality’s. They are social and they have an hierarchy.
They interact with us humans and they rely on us to keep them happy and healthy.
I hope this page, helps to show how wonderful guinea pigs are. I hope it creates an interest, to learn more about our pig friends. I still learn everyday. I never want to stop learning. Cherished Cavies 🐾🐾
