Keeping Cool
If you are feeling the heat, your piggies are too. They don’t do well in heat.
They can suffer from heat stress, so please do check on them. Close curtains, we use blackout curtains in their room, have a fan moving the air. Not directly on them. Fans do not cool the air, but it does feel good to move the air around.
We give high water snacks like chilled cucumber and watermelon on these excessively hot days.
You can also freeze water bottles, cover in a sock and place In their cage. We also use the marble slabs that chinchillas have, so they can lay on something cool if they need too.
Guinea Pigs do not sweat, so they can’t cool themselves naturally. They become lethargic in heat. Go check on them and keep the water bottles topped up.
Guinea pigs thrive better in cooler conditions. Never cool a guinea pig down to quickly. You can send them into shock. Gradually reduce their temperature, wrap in damp wet towels. Give them water or pedialyte via a syringe if alert. Seek vet help ASAP.
